The organic cultivated area in the region of Murcia increased from 100 hectares in 1997 to 25.000 in November of this year. This is an increase of 250 times in only 10 years.
According to the Counselor of Agriculture and Water, marketing of products from Murcia’s organic agriculture reached 55 mln. euros, that is an increase of 83% with respect to the last year, mainly to foreign markets (90% of the total). Organic vegetables are cultivated in 1.500 hectares, dried fruits are cultivated in 8.000 hectares and vine grapes are cultivated in an area of 3.679 hectares. Thus, Murcia is the second largest province of organic production in Spain.
The operators at the sector sum up 923 subscribers of the Council of Organic Agriculture from Murcia, declares Mr. Pedro José Pérez Saura, Technical Director. Most of them are producers (783). There is a goal to certify as organic the products of the region and the Counselor is working on it. Next year, it will start with the certifications to the US and Japanese markets and the participation at the Fruit Logistica from Berlin at the beginning of February.
